BPW October Press Conference (Kicking off a New Year)

The Business and Professional Women’s Club of Greater Sudbury announced some of the exciting developments the club has been involved in over the past year and what women in business in Greater Sudbury have to look forward to in 2010.

“It’s an exciting time to be a woman in business,” says BPW’s new President, Dawn Larsen, Business Advisor with LocalMarketingExpert.ca. “There are so many opportunities for women to lead great companies, start your their own businesses and develop a specialty niche for themselves in this new economy and women are taking advantage of this economic change and achieving success,” says Larsen.

One of the reasons that women are achieving success is their ability to work together in groups like the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Greater Sudbury. Not-for-profit groups like BPW provide a valuable resource for women in business to gain leadership and networking skills and opportunities in addition to the extensive advocacy that the BPW Club does on behalf of women in business across Canada and the world.

“BPW is an amazing resource for all women from any sector. We are miners, doctors, secretaries, business owners, professional care givers, politicians, managers and community leaders, but we are all women and we easily share our skills, experiences and resources to help each other out,” says Larsen.

“Our Board has really worked hard over the summer to develop an extensive strategic plan and deliverables to meet the needs of women in business locally,” says Dawn Larsen, President of BPW Greater Sudbury. “It’s a new economy out there, with new challenges for women in business and we’re listening and responding to meet our community’s needs.”

BPW Greater Sudbury was formed in 1945 and is part of a larger BPW Club organization in Canada and Internationally. BPW has consultative status on the World Health Organization and we have a seat at the United Nations to assist in addressing women’s issues like pay equity and Gender Budgeting. Locally BPW Greater Sudbury has been involved in leading numerous leadership and self development conferences for women and an active participant in local legislation affecting women and their families.

One of BPW’s important roles in the community is recognizing and celebrating the successes of women in business and in the community. They accomplish this by hosting the annual Business and Professional Women’s Gala Awards in March. This year, Eastlink has joined BPW as their community partner for 2010 Women in Business Awards. “Eastlink is a very proud supporter of women in business in our community,” says Marc Serre, Eastlink’s Manager of Business Sales. “We recognize and appreciate the influence and contribution that women in business have made and continue to make in our community locally. We are proud to join BPW to celebrate these successes”

One of the Club’s focus is to encourage more female participation in politics. Female Politicians make good decisions that benefit everyone in the community. To this end, BPW Greater Sudbury offers women running for the first time a bursary in memory of Grace Hartman, the only female Mayor of our City. In her legacy, it is BPW’s hope to encourage and support women who enter into local politics. Council Joscelyne Landry-Altmann commented that when she first ran for City Council, she wasn’t sure who her supporters were and it gave her a great feeling to know that she had the support of the local Business and Professional Women’s Club. Councilor Landry-Altmann saw a letter in the local paper during her campaign applauding women who were running for municipal politics and encouraging more women to do the same and to vote. She said “that letter of support really helped me and I won that election.”

Networking is also an important aspect to BPW and the local Club hosts monthly meetings that are focused on meeting the needs of local women. The dinner meetings focus on professional and self development, current events, hot topics affecting the community and key issues affecting women.
