BPW Greater Sudbury Recognizes Mellaney Dahl For Her Continued Commitment To Helping People In Need Through Her Dedication To The Sudbury Food Bank And In Supporting The Growth Of Young Female Radio Announcers
Not only a voice for 92.7 FM Rock mornings for the past 27 years, Mellaney Dahl has used her skills to help make Sudbury a better place to live, work and play. Mellaney has been devoted to helping families in need especially women within our community. In particular, most of her work over the past 15 years has been focused on the Sudbury Food Bank where she has taken on a pivotal role in contributing to its growth in helping to provide food to people in need. Mellaney feels strongly that the food bank is an enormous part of many people’s lives especially women as it gives them help and support when they need it most. She recounts stories that were shared with her of women who needed to provide for their families during challenging times, and having the food bank to provide essential food for them and their children helped them survive. It is stories like these that fuel Mellaney’s passion in helping women in our community through her work at the Sudbury Food Bank.
Mellaney is halfway through her term as President of the Sudbury Food Bank. She was recruited for the Board of Directors in 2008, but started her involvement about 16 years ago when Edgar Burton came to help her at a food drive her station was putting on and asked Mell to help him gain more participation from schools. Eventually, Mell became chair of the Business and Employee Campaign, and helped expand the drive into local school systems and developed the Kids Helping Kids program. Since Edgar’s passing, Mell has worked with his wife Sharon, his daughters, and other friends and family to keep this important food drive going and growing. The Edgar Burton Food Drive has grown into the largest per capita food drive in Ontario and one of the biggest in Canada.
Mellaney has also been dedicated throughout her career to helping to support the professional growth of young women in the industry serving as a mentor to young female announcers, guiding them in finding their way in their profession while working with them to achieve their career goals. Mellaney has been so passionate in helping young female professionals within the field of radio that she often builds long lasting relationships with the women she mentors.
In 2016, Mell was honoured by the YWCA with a Woman of Distinction Award for her contributions to the community in media and social services. She is also a past recipient of the Telemedia Announcer of the Year, and Rogers Employee of the Year Awards. She is a sought-after host and emcee for events in Greater Sudbury, and devotes much of her spare time to local charities in this capacity.
