BPW Greater Sudbury Recognizes Lorna Macdonald For Her Dedication To Working With Women To Support Their Growth and to Create A Network Of Business Women Within Our City
After spending 21 years at home raising her five children, Lorna utilized her entrepreneurial sense to begin to create a network of local women who can encourage and empower each other through various connections and resources. Lorna created Her Business Guide, a free, local publication exclusively for women in Sudbury, aiming to help women grow their businesses. The magazine helps advertise opportunities, representing selected women in business in Sudbury, local events, as well as women’s resources and includes a help wanted section.
Her Business Guide has quickly become a significantly talked about resource for women to connect and be recognized for their efforts and contributions within the community. With articles that feature women from various backgrounds and inspiring stories, Her Business Guide is a go-to publication for professional women looking for inspiration and resources. While Lorna had no publishing experience, she had a vision to bring together a network of women who could support and empower each other, and so she enlisted the help of various local women and was able to create a business that celebrates and recognizes professional women in our City.
Lorna did not stop at creating a women’s focused resource, she also established It Suits You, a program devoted to helping women look and feel professional. It Suits You provides professional clothing to women who have an interview to attend, and once they are successful at acquiring a position, It Suits You provides each woman with up to a week’s worth of business clothing. All clothing is donated by generous businesswomen in the Sudbury area and collected by Lorna.
Lorna is actively involved in organizing many networking initiatives that provide opportunities for women with proceeds from many of these events donated back to charities within our community. One such event will be held on March 5th, to launch International Women’s Week celebrations.
Lorna has created the Women, Wine and Chocolate Event in support of the Sudbury Women’s Center. This is a night of social celebrations and aimed at making a positive impact for women in the community, while also recognizing a local organization that provides a central access point for women of all cultures to access resources and services that further aim to remove barriers and support self esteem. The event will feature wine, chocolate and appetizers, along with a silent auction and fashion show and most importantly, an opportunity for women to connect with each other and find support where they may need it most, amongst other women.
“Lorna is an inspiration to so many women with her dedication to creating resources that can support and showcase women in our community. We are honoured to recognize our BPW member Lorna MacDonald for all she has accomplished for herself and for women in our city”. Marianne Matichuk, BPW Greater Sudbury President stated.
