2010 BPW Awards Gala

In each of the seven categories the nominee may be from the manufacturing, retail or service sector.  The individual must be an active owner-operator involved in the business for at least 3 years (with the exception of the Young Entrepreneur).  Anyone may submit a nomination.  Self-nominations are encouraged.

Previous winners may be considered for an award in a different category after five years have elapsed. This restriction does not pertain to Lifetime Achievement.  A winner may qualify for this award once the twenty-year criteria is met.                                                                                                        

Finalists will be required (on short notice) to provide an electronic photograph, in colour, for promotional purposes.  Nominees may be nominated in more than one award category.   The judges’ decision is final and not subject to review.  Forms that are incomplete and/or containing false or inaccurate information will be automatically disqualified.  One copy of each nomination is required by mail or by e-submissions.

The Woman Entrepreneur of the Year will be chosen from amongst the winners of the entrepreneurship categories.  She will receive a specially designed pin from BPW Sudbury.

Successful winners in all entrepreneurship categories will be nominated to the 2010 Northern Ontario Business Awards. Winners will receive a framed certificate of achievement from the Club.  All winners will be announced at the BPW Women Entrepreneur Awards Gala to be held on Wednesday June 9, 2010 at the Holiday Inn.

START UP

The recipient has been in business for at least 3 years (three 12-month periods) to a maximum of 5 years.  Her venture provides a product, service or marketing strategy that is innovative and supported by a solid plan for growth.

INNOVATION

Many businesses thrive, but only a few are truly innovative. The recipients company has a unique product, service or business management strategy that gives her company a competitive advantage in the marketplace.  Supported by a talented management team and adequate financing, this company is positioned for growth.

YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR

The recipient is 35 years of age or younger is in business or is operating a business.  The business may have provided revenue to assist with expenses related to her studies. Her business provides a product or service.  She must have been in business at least two years.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT

The recipient has owned her business for 20 years or more and is still actively involved in the operations of her business.  Her personal success has been a catalyst and inspiration for both her contemporaries and younger women.  This award is a salute to entrepreneurial women pioneers.

BUSINESS LEADERSHIP

This award is designed to honor the business woman who has accepted the challenge of developing and expanding a successful business. She has shown her ability to develop her business plan and marketing strategy and apply it to customer service and job creation.  This Award is for women who have been in business at least 5 years.

QUALITY PLUS

The recipient has demonstrated an ability to develop and maintain excellence in every aspect of her offering to customers, employees and the community.

PARTNERSHIP

The recipient has demonstrated strength in entrepreneurial aspects through an established partnership and has maintained a minimum 50% ownership for at least 3 years.

2010 Bernardine Yackman Award

The award, which is bestowed annually, honours a woman in the city of Greater Sudbury who has made a significant contribution to the community in one or more of the following areas:

  • In elected or appointed office
  • In a religious or political organization
  • In volunteer service
  • And/or by acting as a role model in her place of employment.

This award is named after the late Bernardine Yackman, a woman who set an example of commitment and service to her community. She was a longstanding member of BPW Sudbury, and served as club president in the mid-70s. She also served a term on the BPW Ontario provincial board as BPW District 6 director, with responsibility for northeastern Ontario.  Bernardine Yackman was the first female elected as a school board trustee. Bernardine was respected and admired for her dedication to community work. She chaired the Sudbury Board of Education, and worked as a volunteer with the Sudbury and District Red Cross, TV Ontario, and her church, Christ the King. 2010 WOMAN ENTREPRENEUR of the YEAR AWARDS

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

Nominee information must be provided under all the following headings.  Please limit your answers to 250 words per subject unless otherwise indicated.  All information will be strictly confidential.

CHOSEN CATEGORY:  Describe the excellence exhibited by the nominee in the award category chosen (up to 500 words)

COMPANY PROFILE: Describe the history of the nominees company.  Include the source of the idea for the original strategy, financial risk involved and any other pertinent information.  It is important to describe the use of innovative approaches to management and marketing.  Also provide specific information about the company’s current stage of development and future prospects or long-range plan.

PRIMARY PRODUCTS AND/OR SERVICES: Describe the company’s major products or services.  Describe why the company is unique and/or has demonstrated excellence in its field.  Please enclose corporate promotional material where available (newspaper clippings, etc.). 

PERSONAL PROFILE: Briefly describe the nominee’s background including special skills, experience, major accomplishments, etc. 

MANAGEMENT TEAM: Describe how the nominee has been active in the community and volunteer activities.  Please list professional, community or service organizations of which the nominee is a member, as well as, the extent of involvement. 

EMPLOYEE RELATIONSHIPS/CUSTOMER RELATIONS: Describe how the nominee’s company is unique or innovative to its relations with a) employees and b) customers.

Provide specific examples.

EXTERNAL ADVISORS AND REFERENCES: List individuals who have aided the nominee in her entrepreneurial efforts, and who may serve as references.  Provide names, addresses, phone numbers and email address, (i.e. Lawyers, mentors).

FINANCIAL DATA: Financial information is an important qualifying indicator of success. It is therefore imperative the financial data be supplied (can be supplied as percentages).  Only the Financial (Professional) Judge will review this information. They will report to the other judges that the financial information supports the nomination or not.   All judges will sign a pledge of confidentiality.  If applicable, please provide a statement describing any financial assistance received from government sources.
